The position was added to the game of indoor volleyball in 1999 along with a set of special rules for play in order to foster more digs and rallies and to make the game more exciting overall. They can only sub in for one person and have no special rule restrictions. For example if a game is being played to 25 points if a 24 24 tie occurs the game isn t over until a team leads by 2 points. However the rules of volleyball also allow a substitute called a libero and the difference between the two roles confuses even some veteran volleyball observers.
